Welcome To Corbett Dhikala Zone Tour

Being the largest and most varied zone in Corbett, Dhikala is famous for its abundant natural beauty as well as offering the best sight for exotic fauna. The entry gate is 18 km away from Ramnagar city. Night stay inside the Dhikala Tourism Zone is highly recommended for the hard core wildlife enthusiasts. Being one of the richest home of wild animals, the Jim Corbett National Park is rich in flora too. More than 75% of the total area of the Corbett is dominated by Sal forests.

Trees :

Sal, Khair and Sissoo are the most visible trees found in Corbett. Though, there are several other species that contribute to the sound diversity of Jim Corbett are scattered throughout the park. Chir Pine is the only conifer found in the park. Some part of the Corbett is dominated by Bamboo forests. The main species is Male Bamboo (Dendrocalamus strictus) having clustered stout stems and shining papery stem sheaths. Bamboos follow a peculiar flowering process. All bamboos in a forest flower together at the same time once in several decades. After flowering, fruiting and dispersal of seeds, all individuals die together.

Flowering Trees :

Green is the fundamental color of nature and variety of flowering trees in Corbett lend that beautiful color to the forests. The forests of the Corbett is dominated by numerous flowering plant, some of them can be named as Kachnar (Bauhinia Variegata) with white tom pink flowers, Semal (Bombax ceiba) with giant red blooms, Dhak or popularly called as the flame of the forest with bright and eye pleasing orange flowers, Madaar or Indian Coral (Erythrinia indica) with red flowers and Amaltas (Cassia fistula) with bright yellow chandelier like blooms. Though, some species of trees that do not occur naturally in the park have been artificially planted in and around the habitation of the park. These include Teak (Tectona grandis), Silver Oak (Gravillea robusta), Eucalyptus, Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosaefolia) and Bottlebrush (Callistemon viminalis), and can be seen in and around forest rest houses inside the Corbett Tiger Reserve area.

Shrubs :

Floor of the Corbett forest is also dominated by the several species of Ber (Zizyphus) found in open areas and is boon for many birds and animals providing food and habitat to them. Maror Phali (Helicteres isora) is an easily noticeable shrub. If you look at the fruits of this amazing shrub, they are in the form of twisted spiraling pods. Jhau is different kind of shrubs found along the Ramganga basin on sandy or rocky soil.

Attractions in Dhikala Zone :

Canter safari is conducted by the Corbett forest officials in the Dhikala zone to provide an opportunity to explore the rich wildlife of this zone. The Canter safari is the only option for the wildlife lovers who stay out of the Dhikala tourism zone and want to visit the area because the Day Jeep safari is not conducted for this zone. The Canter is a 16-seater open bus and a seat on the Canter can be booked from online or from the Corbett National Park office in Ramnagar. The starting point of the Canter safari is Ramnagar Corbett office so the tourists can board the Canter here for the safari if they have pre-booked permit. During the day safari, the Canter makes a stop at the Dhikala forest rest house for a while and tourists can get down from the Canter, get refreshed, take a walk around the compound and can also enjoy the beauty of the overlooking Ramganga river as well as the chance sighting of various wild animals on the riverbed.

Gairal Crocodile Point :

Located near the Gairal Rest house, the crocodile point is a terrace-like spot built over a pool having a large number of crocodiles as the permanent habitat. You can watch the crocodiles and their activity by standing on the terrace and looking down in the pool. This is an amazing feeling to watch such a dangerous creature of water at so close.

Mammals:

Tiger leopard, elephant, Spotted deer (Axis axis),chital, sambar(Cervus unicolor), hog deer(Axis percinus), barking deer(Muntiacus muntjak), wild boar(Sus scrofa), Langoor (Presbutis entellus) , Wild pig, rhesus monkey (Macaque mulatto), sambar and jackal.

Grass Lands (Chaurs) :

The large grassland, which is known as Chaurs, is the prime location in the Dhikala to spot wild animals from tigers to elephants, various species of deer, wild pigs and many others. Dhikala zone is much famous for its vast Chaurs and the tiger sighting in the area is frequently reported by the tourists.

Staying facilities are also available at Bijrani, Gairal, Jhirna and Kanda forest rest houses. The government has increased accommodation in recent years by introducing additional annexes and dormitories. These all forest rest houses have solar electric fencing that keeps the tourists safe.
